Last night it rained (off and on today too), it was glorious.
I am one of those people that loves when it rains. My mood gets lighter and my nerves calm down. My head seems to clear as if the raindrops wash away all thoughts. I love a good rainy day.
Last night was a perfect night, as I crawled into bed I heard it. CRASH. A thunderstorm was on its way. Big fat raindrops fell onto the roof in a rhythmic nature lulling me to sleep. It is the best way to fall asleep.
Tonight I resort to my noise machine to recreate mother nature’s music. It won’t be the same.
I’d Rather Be Reading
Sleep and I have always been great friends. There are some times when we are inseparable. It comes as no surprise that we get along so well, so well that I spend at least 8 hours each night with sleep and 10 if I’m lucky. Last night was a blimp in our friendship though. I sadly only spent half my usual time at sleep’s house last night and I paid for it today.
Today was a day filled with grumpiness and yawns. Even though my sister was kind enough to deliver a much needed latte I still had to drag myself around the house on no energy. I even tried to fit in a few cat naps but since I spent the day babysitting it never actually happened. Babies surprisingly zap all your energy. Tiny humans are always on and it is exhausting. Today I tried out new voices for reading stories aloud and I learned that Niecers likes books read fast. We also watched Harry Potter 2 (COS) this evening. The Mandrakes and Pixies were a big hit, as well as Quidditch.
I have not had much time to get in my reading. I am hoping tonight I can change that. I also got signed up for a book club by Busy. I have two weeks to finish half of this new book. Libraries expect you to read a book in two weeks so I should be able to manage this timeline. Tonight I’m finishing Nick and Norah, my C book of my reading challenge. I picked Divergent for my D book which I am looking forward to reading (finally, I know). Any book ideas for E? Either author’s last name or book title that starts with E.
I’m usually blogging at 11 p.m. to get my daily post in and reading gets pushed back later. Tonight I’m an hour ahead so yay! reading time.
Tension, stress and anxiety will disrupt your night’s sleep. I have been dealing with mild insomnia the last few months, always during the winter. Below is a list of suggestions that have worked for me and may or may not work in your case. I am not a doctor or licensed professional, follow advice/tips at your own risk.
Ways to Get More Sleep
- I would listen to music every night if I could remember to turn it on. Music designated for sleep is ideal, soft and mellow tunes, but I really enjoy the sound of rain or a sleep playlist with my favorite easy listening artists.
- A warm bath
- Herbal tea or warm milk
- Limit caffeine after dinner
- Avoid television before bed
- Your bed and sleeping should not be associated with other things. Television is a distraction and keeps your senses alert.
- I always read before going to bed, it helps me not to think about the day and to get lost in another world. The problem sometimes is not being able to stop reading.
Last night was an early night for me. I try to go to bed at the same time to develop a routine and so that my mind can get used to the “powering down” phase of the night. But I usually cannot fall asleep until one or two in the morning. I need to revisit these tips and try some others to get my sleep schedule back on the right track.
